Take 5 with Gonzalo Garcia

Gonzalo Garcia, the new Artistic Director of the Miami City Ballet, has taken the stage by storm with a whirlwind of change and innovation. Read more at BocaVibe.com.

A year ago, Garcia did not expect to be living in South Florida, let alone leading one of the state’s preeminent arts organizations. Nor did he anticipate that Miami City Ballet would be bidding farewell to then-Artistic Director Lourdes Lopez on the cusp of the company’s 40th anniversary season.

Lopez, who had been helming the organization since 2013, announced her departure with two years left in her contract. “I’m sure it was a shock for them,” Garcia says. “She had a change of heart, and a change of heart sometimes means an opportunity for an institution to reassess what direction they want to go, and pump fresh energy. And I think that’s what they did with me.”

From Dance Career to Artistic Director

Garcia is so fresh from his dance career he might as well have arrived to Miami vacuum-sealed. He retired from performance after a successful 20-year career, during which he danced with some of the world’s most renowned companies.

  • He began his dance training at the age of 5 and went on to study at the prestigious Juilliard School in New York City.
  • Garcia danced with companies such as American Ballet Theatre, The Royal Ballet, and The Paris Opera Ballet.
  • During his performance career, he appeared in over 50 productions, including works by some of the greatest choreographers of all time.

A New Era for Miami City Ballet

Garcia’s appointment as Artistic Director marks a new era for Miami City Ballet. With his extensive experience in dance and his passion for innovation, he is poised to take the company to new heights.

  • Under Garcia’s leadership, the company plans to expand its repertoire and commission new works from emerging choreographers.
  • The company will also focus on increasing diversity and inclusion within its ranks, both on and off stage.
  • Garcia is committed to making Miami City Ballet a hub for artistic innovation and excellence in dance.

What’s Next for Garcia?

In the coming months, Garcia will be busy getting to know his new team and developing the company’s future plans. He will also be working closely with Lopez to ensure a smooth transition.

“I’m excited to get started and make my mark on this incredible institution,” Garcia says. “It’s going to be a wild ride, and I’m honored to be at the helm.”
