Here’s What’s on the Agenda for the New Boca Raton City Council’s First Meeting
Boca Raton’s new city council will have its first regular meeting today, and we’ve got the inside scoop on what’s on the agenda. From a downtown civic engagement task force to community input on Memorial Park, here’s what you need to know. Read more at BocaVibe.com.
Creating a Downtown Civic Engagement Task Force
Mayor Andy Thomson requested the creation of a Downtown Civic Engagement Task Force, which will facilitate a structured, community-driven process for gathering input regarding the future of Memorial Park and the surrounding public spaces. The task force will be chaired by Mayor Thomson himself, with nine members appointed by the city council.

- Per a memo from City Manager Mark Sohaney, the task force’s purpose is to “facilitate a structured, community-driven process” for gathering input on Memorial Park and surrounding public spaces.
- The idea behind the task force is to proceed with a downtown campus plan that begins with community input, as opposed to the Terra/Frisbie proposal that was criticized for moving quickly and with poor communication from the city.
Community Input on Memorial Park
The new city council will also be discussing plans for Memorial Park, which has been a topic of controversy in recent months. The Terra/Frisbie proposal, which was met with criticism for its lack of community input and poor communication from the city, is being replaced by a more community-driven approach.
Other Agenda Items
In addition to the downtown civic engagement task force and Memorial Park plans, the new city council will also be discussing other agenda items, including:
- A proposal for a new public safety facility
- A plan for improving traffic flow in the downtown area
- A discussion on the city’s budget and financial priorities
