Take 5 with Gonzalo Garcia: A New Chapter for the Miami City Ballet

A Change in Direction
Lopez, who had been serving as the artistic director since 2013, announced her departure with two years left on her contract. “I’m sure it was a shock for them,” Garcia says of the sudden change. “She had a change of heart, and sometimes that means an opportunity for an institution to reassess what direction they want to go, and pump fresh energy.” Indeed, Garcia is so new to the role that he might as well have arrived vacuum-sealed.

A Fresh Perspective
Garcia’s background in dance is a far cry from his current role. He spent years performing with various companies before retiring from the stage. “I think my experience as a dancer has given me a unique perspective on what makes a successful company,” he says. “I’m excited to bring that expertise to Miami City Ballet and help shape its future.”
What’s Next for Garcia?
- Garcia is currently leading the company through its 40th anniversary season, which promises to be an exciting one.
- He has already announced several new productions and collaborations with local artists.
- Garcia is also committed to increasing diversity and inclusion within the company’s ranks.
“I’m passionate about using my experience to make a positive impact on the community,” Garcia says. “Miami City Ballet is an incredible institution, and I feel honored to be a part of it.” With his fresh perspective and dance background, Garcia is poised to take Miami City Ballet to new heights.
