A year ago, Garcia did not expect to be living in South Florida, let alone at the helm of the Miami City Ballet. The company’s departure from its long-time Artistic Director Lourdes Lopez on the cusp of its 40th anniversary season was a surprise to many.

Lopez, who had been leading the organization since 2013, announced her departure with two years left in her contract. “I’m sure it was a shock for them,” Garcia says. “She had a change of heart, and a change of heart sometimes means an opportunity for an institution to reassess what direction they want to go, and pump fresh energy.” Indeed, Garcia is so fresh from his dance career he might as well have arrived to Miami vacuum-sealed.

Garcia’s background in dance is impressive. He began training at the age of 12 and went on to perform with some of the world’s most renowned companies, including the American Ballet Theatre and the San Francisco Ballet.

From Performance to Leadership

  • Garcia retired from performance in 2019, citing a desire to focus on his family and pursue other interests.
  • In 2020, he was approached by the Miami City Ballet to take over as Artistic Director, a role he accepted with enthusiasm.
  • Under Garcia’s leadership, the company has continued to thrive, with a strong commitment to innovation and artistic growth.

Garcia’s vision for the Miami City Ballet is one of collaboration and inclusivity. “I want our dancers to feel like they’re part of something bigger than themselves,” he says. “Something that’s going to make a difference in their lives, and in the lives of our audience members.”

A New Era for the Miami City Ballet

The company’s 40th anniversary season is just around the corner, and Garcia is excited to mark this milestone with a series of innovative productions.

  • The company will premiere a new work by renowned choreographer William Forsythe, set to music by Steve Reich.
  • Garcia has also announced plans for a major collaboration with the Miami-based artist, Ana Mendieta.
  • These productions will not only showcase the company’s technical prowess but also its commitment to artistic innovation and risk-taking.

As Garcia looks to the future, he is clear about his vision for the Miami City Ballet. “I want this company to be a place where artists can come to grow, to learn, and to take risks,” he says. “Where they can push the boundaries of what’s possible, and create something truly new and original.”
