The news of then-Artistic Director Lourdes Lopez’s departure on the cusp of the company’s 40th anniversary season came as a shock to many. Lopez had been at the helm since 2013 and was expected to see out her contract. However, she announced her departure with two years left on her term, citing a change of heart.

“I’m sure it was a shock for them,” Garcia says. “She had a change of heart, and a change of heart sometimes means an opportunity for an institution to reassess what direction they want to go, and pump fresh energy.” Indeed, Garcia is so new to the scene that he might as well have arrived vacuum-sealed.
