Take 5 with Gonzalo Garcia: A New Chapter for Miami City Ballet

Gonzalo Garcia, the newly appointed Artistic Director of Miami City Ballet, is still pinching himself. A year ago, he was living in South Florida, and now he’s leading one of the state’s most renowned arts organizations. Read more at BocaVibe.com.

It’s a remarkable story that took an unexpected turn when then-Artistic Director Lourdes Lopez announced her departure with two years left on her contract. “I’m sure it was a shock for them,” Garcia says. “She had a change of heart, and sometimes that means an opportunity for an institution to reassess what direction they want to go and pump fresh energy.”

Garcia’s own background is steeped in dance. He retired from performance just months before being approached by Miami City Ballet. “I was still getting used to not having a schedule, you know?” he laughs.

What’s Next for Miami City Ballet?

  • Garcia’s first order of business is to get to know the company and its community better. He wants to hear from dancers, musicians, and audiences alike about what they want to see from the organization in the future.
  • He’s also looking to shake things up with new productions and collaborations. “I think we can do some really exciting things together,” he says.
  • Garcia is a big fan of Miami City Ballet’s reputation for innovation and risk-taking. He wants to build on that legacy while still staying true to the company’s roots.

“Miami City Ballet has always been about pushing boundaries and taking risks,” Garcia says. “I’m excited to be a part of that tradition.”

A New Era for Miami City Ballet?

With Lopez’s departure, there are bound to be some changes at Miami City Ballet. But Garcia is confident that the organization will continue to thrive under his leadership.

“We’re going to keep doing what we do best: creating beautiful performances and bringing people together through dance,” he says.

What’s Next for Gonzalo Garcia?

Garcia’s next move is to get settled into his new role. He’ll be working closely with the company’s dancers, musicians, and staff to develop a new artistic vision for Miami City Ballet.

“It’s going to be a lot of work, but I’m up for the challenge,” he says with a smile.
