Take 5 with Gonzalo Garcia

Gonzalo Garcia, the new Artistic Director of Miami City Ballet, has taken the stage by storm in South Florida. A year ago, who would have thought that he’d be leading one of the state’s preeminent arts organizations? Certainly not Garcia himself, who retired from performance just a few years prior to his appointment. Read more at BocaVibe.com.

As we sit down with Garcia at the Miami City Ballet’s headquarters, it’s clear that he’s still getting used to being in the spotlight. “I’m sure it was a shock for them,” he says of Lourdes Lopez, the organization’s departing Artistic Director. “She had a change of heart, and a change of heart sometimes means an opportunity for an institution to reassess what direction they want to go, and pump fresh energy.”

Garcia’s own journey to Miami was far from conventional. A native of Argentina, he began his dance training at the age of 8 and went on to perform with some of the world’s top companies before retiring in his mid-30s.

His Vision for Miami City Ballet

Garcia’s vision for Miami City Ballet is one of innovation and collaboration. “I want to bring a new level of excitement and energy to our performances,” he says. “We’re going to be pushing the boundaries of what’s possible with classical ballet, while still honoring the rich tradition of the art form.”

One of Garcia’s first moves as Artistic Director was to announce a major new production of Swan Lake, which will feature a diverse cast and innovative staging.

What’s Next for Miami City Ballet?

  • A new production of The Nutcracker, featuring a mix of traditional and contemporary choreography
  • A collaboration with the renowned ballet company, The Royal Ballet
  • A series of community outreach programs aimed at promoting diversity and inclusion in the arts

As Garcia looks to the future, he’s clear about his priorities. “I want Miami City Ballet to be a place where artists can come to grow and thrive,” he says. “Where we can push the boundaries of what’s possible with classical ballet, while still honoring the rich tradition of the art form.”

With Garcia at the helm, it’s clear that Miami City Ballet is in good hands. As one of the state’s preeminent arts organizations, they’re poised to take center stage in South Florida for years to come.
