Garcia retired from his dance career just two years ago, but it wasn’t long before he found himself at the helm of the Miami City Ballet. “I’m sure it was a shock for them,” Garcia says. “She had a change of heart, and a change of heart sometimes means an opportunity for an institution to reassess what direction they want to go, and pump fresh energy.”

A New Era for the Miami City Ballet

Lourdes Lopez, who had been helming the organization since 2013, announced her departure with two years left in her contract. The move was seen as a surprise by many, but Garcia is confident that it was the right decision for the company.
