Area Students Honored With Holocaust Education Awards

Boca Raton, FL – Florida Atlantic University has recognized high school and middle school students from across Florida as winners of the Craig and Barbara Weiner Holocaust Reflection Contest, an initiative sponsored by FAU’s Dorothy F. The contest, which aims to educate young people about the importance of Holocaust awareness and remembrance, received over 200 submissions from students in grades 6-12. The winners were selected based on their thoughtful and well-researched reflections on the significance of the Holocaust and its impact on society today.

Winners Recognized for Their Work

The winners of the contest will receive a $1,000 scholarship and be recognized at an awards ceremony at FAU’s campus. The event is expected to take place in May 2024.

  • David Lee, a 10th-grade student from Palm Beach Gardens High School
  • Samantha Goldberg, an 8th-grade student from Spanish River Community High School

The winners were chosen from a pool of talented students who demonstrated exceptional writing and research skills. Their reflections provided valuable insights into the complexities of the Holocaust and its ongoing relevance in today’s world.

Holocaust Awareness is Crucial for Future Generations

“The Craig and Barbara Weiner Holocaust Reflection Contest is an excellent way to educate young people about the importance of Holocaust awareness and remembrance,” said Dr. Deborah L. Goggin, Dean of the Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters at FAU. “By recognizing the talents of these students, we hope to inspire a new generation of leaders who will carry on the legacy of Holocaust education and remembrance.”

The contest is part of FAU’s ongoing commitment to promoting Holocaust awareness and education in South Florida. The university’s efforts aim to foster a deeper understanding of this critical aspect of human history and its ongoing impact on society today.
