The news of Lourdes Lopez’s departure was a shock to many, including Garcia himself. “She had a change of heart,” he explains. “And sometimes that means an opportunity for an institution to reassess what direction they want to go and pump fresh energy.”
A New Chapter for the Miami City Ballet
Lopez had been at the helm of the Miami City Ballet since 2013, and her departure marks a significant turning point in the company’s history. With two years left on her contract, Lopez announced her decision to leave with a sense of urgency.

“I’m sure it was a shock for them,” Garcia says. “She had been leading the organization for nearly a decade, and it’s clear that she has a deep understanding of what makes the company tick.”
Garcia’s Journey to Leadership
Garcia’s own journey to leadership is nothing short of remarkable. After retiring from performance, he found himself in South Florida with little more than a suitcase and a sense of purpose.
- He began by teaching dance classes at local studios, sharing his passion for the art form with students of all ages.
- As his reputation grew, so did his opportunities. He was soon invited to join the Miami City Ballet as an artistic advisor, providing guidance and support to the company’s dancers and staff.
- Today, Garcia is leading the charge at the Miami City Ballet, bringing a fresh perspective and new energy to the organization.
“I’m excited to be here,” he says. “The Miami City Ballet has a rich history and a talented group of dancers. I’m looking forward to working with them to create something truly special.”
