Take 5 with Gonzalo Garcia

Gonzalo Garcia, the new Artistic Director of Miami City Ballet, has taken the stage by storm with his fresh perspective and dance background. Read more at BocaVibe.com.

A year ago, Garcia did not expect to be living in South Florida, let alone leading one of the state’s preeminent arts organizations. Nor did Miami City Ballet expect to be bidding farewell to then-Artistic Director Lourdes Lopez on the cusp of the company’s 40th anniversary season.

Lopez, who had been helming the organization since 2013, announced her departure with two years left in her contract. “I’m sure it was a shock for them,” Garcia says. “She had a change of heart, and a change of heart sometimes means an opportunity for an institution to reassess what direction they want to go, and pump fresh energy.”

Indeed, Garcia is so fresh from his dance career he might as well have arrived to Miami vacuum-sealed. He retired from performance at the age of 35, after a successful 15-year career with companies such as American Ballet Theatre and The Royal Ballet.

Garcia’s Journey

Before joining Miami City Ballet, Garcia was a principal dancer with several prominent companies. His extensive experience on stage has given him a unique understanding of the world of dance.

  • Garcia began his training at the age of 10 and went on to study at the School of American Ballet in New York City.
  • He joined American Ballet Theatre as an apprentice dancer and quickly rose through the ranks, becoming a principal dancer at just 25 years old.
  • Garcia also danced with The Royal Ballet for several seasons before retiring to pursue his passion for teaching and mentoring.

A New Era for Miami City Ballet

With Garcia at the helm, Miami City Ballet is poised to embark on a new era of artistic innovation and growth. The company’s 40th anniversary season promises to be an exciting one, with a diverse range of productions and collaborations.

Garcia is committed to bringing fresh energy and perspectives to the company, while still honoring its rich history and tradition.

What’s Next for Garcia?

As Artistic Director of Miami City Ballet, Garcia will be responsible for leading the company’s artistic vision and direction. He will also be working closely with the board of directors and staff to ensure a smooth transition.

In an interview, Garcia expressed his excitement about the future of Miami City Ballet: “I’m thrilled to be a part of this incredible organization and to have the opportunity to shape its future.”
