Area Students Honored With Holocaust Education Awards

Boca Raton, FL – Florida Atlantic University has recognized high school and middle school students from across Florida as winners of the Craig and Barbara Weiner Holocaust Reflection Contest, an initiative sponsored by FAU’s Dorothy F. The contest aims to educate young people about the importance of Holocaust awareness and remembrance, and to encourage them to think critically about the impact of prejudice and discrimination on individuals and communities.

Winners Announced

  • High school students from Boca Raton High School won first place with their essay “The Importance of Tolerance”
  • Middle school students from Spanish River Community School won second place with their essay “The Holocaust: A Lesson in Humanity”
  • A group of students from FAU’s own Holocaust Education Program won third place with their project “A Day in the Life of a Holocaust Survivor”

The winners were selected from over 100 entries submitted by students across Florida, and will receive awards and recognition at a special ceremony at FAU’s Dorothy F. Schmidt College of Arts and Letters.

Contest Judges Praise Winners

“The quality of the submissions was outstanding,” said Dr. Deborah Lipstadt, a Holocaust expert and professor at Emory University, who served as one of the contest judges. “We were impressed by the thoughtfulness and depth of insight displayed by all of the winners.”

Contest Sponsors Express Gratitude

“We are thrilled to see so many young people taking an interest in Holocaust education,” said Dr. Steven L. Mintz, director of FAU’s Holocaust Education Program and one of the contest sponsors. “We hope that this contest will inspire a new generation of leaders to work towards creating a more just and compassionate world.”
