Take 5 with Gonzalo Garcia

Gonzalo Garcia, the new Artistic Director of Miami City Ballet, has taken the stage by storm with his fresh perspective and dance expertise. Read more at BocaVibe.com.

A year ago, Garcia did not expect to be living in South Florida, let alone leading one of the state’s preeminent arts organizations. Nor did Miami City Ballet expect to be bidding farewell to then-Artistic Director Lourdes Lopez on the cusp of the company’s 40th anniversary season.

Lopez, who had been helming the organization since 2013, announced her departure with two years left in her contract. “I’m sure it was a shock for them,” Garcia says. “She had a change of heart, and a change of heart sometimes means an opportunity for an institution to reassess what direction they want to go, and pump fresh energy. And I think that’s what they did with me.”

About Gonzalo Garcia

Garcia is so fresh from his dance career he might as well have arrived to Miami vacuum-sealed. He retired from performance at the age of 35 after a successful 15-year career with companies such as American Ballet Theatre and The Royal Ballet.

  • He began his training at the School of American Ballet in New York City, where he was later accepted into the prestigious Juilliard School.
  • Garcia has performed leading roles in productions such as Swan Lake, Giselle, and The Nutcracker.
  • He has also worked extensively with renowned choreographers such as Twyla Tharp and William Forsythe.

The Future of Miami City Ballet

Garcia’s appointment marks a new era for the company, one that promises to bring fresh energy and innovative productions to the stage. With his extensive dance background and experience leading companies such as American Ballet Theatre, Garcia is well-equipped to lead the company into its 40th anniversary season.

“I’m excited to be a part of this institution,” Garcia says. “Miami City Ballet has a rich history and a loyal following. I look forward to working with the dancers, staff, and audiences to create unforgettable performances.”
