Take 5 with Gonzalo Garcia: A New Chapter for Miami City Ballet
A year ago, Gonzalo Garcia did not expect to be living in South Florida, let alone leading one of the state’s preeminent arts organizations. Nor did Miami City Ballet expect to be bidding farewell to then-Artistic Director Lourdes Lopez on the cusp of the company’s 40th anniversary season. Read more at BocaVibe.com.
Lopez, who had been helming the organization since 2013, announced her departure with two years left in her contract. “I’m sure it was a shock for them,” Garcia says. “She had a change of heart, and a change of heart sometimes means an opportunity for an institution to reassess what direction they want to go, and pump fresh energy. And I think that’s what they did with me.”

Garcia is so fresh from his dance career he might as well have arrived to Miami vacuum-sealed. He retired from performance over a decade ago, but his passion for dance never faded.
From Performance to Leadership
- Garcia’s background in dance has served him well in his new role, allowing him to bring a unique perspective to the organization.
- His experience as a performer has given him a deep understanding of the company’s needs and goals.
- He is committed to continuing Lopez’s legacy while also bringing new ideas and energy to the table.
Garcia’s appointment was met with excitement from the Miami City Ballet community, who are eager to see what he will bring to the organization.
A New Era for Miami City Ballet
- The company is now entering its 40th anniversary season, and Garcia is looking forward to marking this milestone with a series of special events and performances.
- He plans to build on Lopez’s success while also introducing new initiatives and programs to engage the community.
- Garcia is committed to making Miami City Ballet a leader in the world of dance, and he is confident that his experience and passion will serve him well in this role.
As Garcia looks to the future, he is excited to take on this new challenge and make a lasting impact on the organization. With his background in dance and his passion for leadership, he is well-equipped to lead Miami City Ballet into its next chapter.
