Take 5 with Gonzalo Garcia

Gonzalo Garcia’s journey to leading one of South Florida’s most renowned arts organizations is a tale of unexpected twists and turns. Read more at BocaVibe.com.

A year ago, Garcia did not expect to be living in South Florida, let alone at the helm of Miami City Ballet. Nor did he anticipate that the company would be bidding farewell to its long-time Artistic Director Lourdes Lopez on the cusp of its 40th anniversary season.

Lopez, who had been guiding the organization since 2013, announced her departure with two years left in her contract. “I’m sure it was a shock for them,” Garcia says. “She had a change of heart, and a change of heart sometimes means an opportunity for an institution to reassess what direction they want to go, and pump fresh energy. And I think that’s what they did with me.”

A New Chapter for Miami City Ballet

Garcia is indeed fresh from his dance career, having retired from performance just a few years ago. He might as well have arrived in Miami vacuum-sealed, so sudden was his ascension to the top of one of the state’s most respected arts organizations.

A New Era for Boca Raton’s Arts Scene

As he settles into his new role, Garcia is looking forward to getting to know the community and to working with local artists and organizations. “I’m excited to be a part of this vibrant arts scene, and to contribute to its growth and development,” he says.
