A year ago, Garcia did not expect to be living in South Florida, let alone leading one of the state’s preeminent arts organizations. Nor did Miami City Ballet expect to be bidding farewell to then-Artistic Director Lourdes Lopez on the cusp of the company’s 40th anniversary season.
Lopez, who had been helming the organization since 2013, announced her departure with two years left in her contract. “I’m sure it was a shock for them,” Garcia says. “She had a change of heart, and a change of heart sometimes means an opportunity for an institution to reassess what direction they want to go, and pump fresh energy.” Indeed, Garcia is so fresh from his dance career he might as well have arrived to Miami vacuum-sealed.

Garcia’s background in dance is impressive. He began his training at the age of 10 and went on to perform with some of the world’s most renowned companies, including the American Ballet Theatre and the New York City Ballet.
- During his time with the ABT, Garcia performed in productions such as “Swan Lake” and “Giselle.”
- He also had the opportunity to work with some of the world’s most renowned choreographers, including Twyla Tharp and Mark Morris.
Garcia’s appointment as Artistic Director of Miami City Ballet has been met with excitement from fans and critics alike. His passion for dance and his commitment to bringing new energy to the organization are seen as a breath of fresh air.
- Under Garcia’s leadership, Miami City Ballet will be introducing a number of new productions, including a revival of “The Firebird” and a world premiere of a new work by choreographer Justin Peck.
- The company will also be expanding its educational programs, with a focus on providing opportunities for young dancers from underrepresented communities.
Garcia’s vision for Miami City Ballet is one of innovation and collaboration. He believes that the company should be pushing the boundaries of what is possible in dance, while also staying true to its roots and tradition.
